The first week of September means two things in NYC: back to school for kids and New York Fashion Week for the women of NYC.
NYC is known for it's fashionable residents -- I mean, have you ever just gone to SoHo and people watched!? I really enjoy seeing the looks that fashion bloggers/influencers put together during this time but I noticed one thing: there is an extreme lack of black women and women of color in these street style photos. I always see photos of bomb black women at NYFW like Kahlana Barfield Brown, Shiona Turini, and Claire Sulmers but I knew there had to be more!
Fortunately, lifestyle photographer Taylor aka @mama.photog had the same sentiments and brought together a group of 8 fashionable black women (myself included) for an epic NYC street style photoshoot.
This shoot meant more than just black women wearing fly outfits -- this shoot symbolizes the importance of inclusion. Black women embody style, grace, class and exude confidence in a world that says we shouldn't.
The shoot took place in SoHo in front of the location known as "The Corner" which is a popular spot in NYC for fashion bloggers to get content for their Instagram feeds. Ironically, i've only seen white bloggers take photos in this location -- until now.
All Taylor did was give us the location, day and time -- no style direction -- and we all came to slay. I loved that she gave us the freedom to wear what we wanted and to express our individual style. Often times, we are put into a box and are expected to look and dress a certain way. Fashion is so much better when people are original + creative -- I respect Taylor for respecting individuality.
I decided to wear an all red suit from Zara. I am obsessed with the tailored look lately! I wore the blazer with nothing underneath to add a bit of femininity and edge. My lips were painted red to fulfill a monochromatic look and I parted my hair in the middle with my curls combed out for added volume. I finished the look with my all white Nike Air Max 95's because I believe that you shouldn't have to sacrifice comfort for fashion.
When all of the women showed up, we noticed that red was a popular color choice among us and it made for great harmony in the photos!
This shoot was super fun and an awesome opportunity where I met other like-minded women of color. Everyone was super dope and Taylor was amazing the work with.
Here are some pics from the shoot -- enjoy!
