#exploringJozi is a series started to showcase dope things to do and see in Johannesburg, South Africa. From food to fashion to design, Johannesburg has got a lot to offer and I’m here to share my findings with you!
If you’re thinking Johannesburg doesn’t have healthy eating spots: think again.
I recently stumbled upon Lexi’s Healthy Eatery in Sandton and was immediately intrigued when I saw the words Eat More Plants on the storefront vestibule. As a former vegan eater, I am always keen on plant-based restaurants. Lexi’s Eatery, owned by plant-based chef Lexi, strives for sustainable, conscious, moral and nutritious ways of eating. Plants are the main ingredients in the dishes at Lexi’s but don’t worry, meat lovers: animal products are also used!
Lexi’s motive is to use very little processed foods — which is a refreshing alternative to the vast amount of processed foods that we eat in our everyday lives.
It was a beautiful sunny day so I dragged my boyfriend Lebo to venture with me to Lexi’s to see what this place was all about. Upon entering, I noticed that we were arriving at the tail-end of the lunch rush. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals, chatting and making the most of the lovely day. We were given menus and I was super excited to see the extensive options on the drinks menu. I’ve been trying to consume less coffee so I ordered a Red Velvet Latte (beetroot, cacao, coconut sugar + almond milk) and Lebo ordered The Salted Caramel Smoothie (banana, dates, vanilla, Himalayan salt & almond butter). The Red Velvet Latte was so delicious and gave me the satisfaction of drinking coffee minus the caffeine. The smoothie was also really nice (of course I had to steal a taste) and I liked that it was thick — they definitely didn’t skimp on any ingredients.
After enjoying the drinks, we placed our food orders. While waiting on our food, I got a chance to really take in the decor. The main colour used in the decor at Lexi’s is yellow — this colour to me exudes happiness. I am a firm believer in interiors evoking emotions and the interior of Lexi’s made me feel upbeat + happy. I also loved that while seated, we were surrounded by succulent plants. From the font to the dishes; the decor here is very intentional.
Our food arrived and I was surprised at the portions. I was expecting the portions to be super small (because most healthy restaurants serve super small portions for an expensive price) but they were actually the perfect size. I ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower Sarmie in a low-carb wrap and Lebo ordered The Ol’ Beef Burger. I was really satisfied with my dish and now I am keen on trying other dishes on the menu (there is an Activated Charcoal Burger on the menu that sounds interesting). At the end of our meal; the best thing was that we left satisfied and not too stuffed.
If you’re looking for a place in Joburg to eat with healthy, delicious food at a reasonable price; then Lexi’s Healthy Eatery in Sandton is definitely a place to try. There are choices to satisfy everyone from vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, paelo eaters and meat lovers (like Lebo).
